OSAKA -- A chimpanzee that escaped from its cage at a zoo in this west Japan city on the morning of Oct. 17 and bit a veterinarian in the face has been found following a search.
At around 10:20 a.m., a staffer at Osaka Tennoji Zoo in Osaka's Tennoji Ward alerted the Osaka Prefectural Police's Tennoji Police Station, saying, "A chimpanzee's got out of its pen. It hasn't left the zoo."
According to the Osaka City Fire Department, the animal bit a veterinarian in his 40s in the face when he tried to capture it.
According to the zoo and the Osaka Municipal Government, workers subsequently spotted the chimpanzee, a female, on a tree inside the zoo. She was shot with a tranquilizer gun and is now under observation by zookeepers.
The zoo has evacuated visitors and temporarily closed, according to zoo officials.
